About Berlin Wall

Source: State of Berlin

The Berlin Wall, a physical embodiment of the Cold War tensions, was erected in 1961 by the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) as a barrier separating East Berlin from West Berlin. The wall was a stark manifestation of the ideological conflict between the communist Eastern Bloc, led by the Soviet Union, and the democratic Western Bloc, spearheaded by the United States and its allies. Its towering presence was a constant reminder of the ideological chasm that divided not just a city but also the world.

Development of the Berlin Wall

  • In 1945, after the end of World War II, Germany was divided into four zones of occupation. It was controlled by the United States, Britain, France, and the Soviet Union.
  • Berlin, located within the Soviet zone, was also divided into four sectors. The American, British, and French sectors formed West Berlin, and the Soviet sector became East Berlin.
  • Tensions between the Western democracies and the Soviet Union grew during the Cold War. This resulted in the deepening of the division between East and West Germany.
  • In 1961, the East German government, supported by the Soviet Union, built a wire barrier around West Berlin. This cut off the city from the surrounding East German territory.
  • The initial wire barrier eventually developed into a fortified concrete structure known as the Berlin Wall. It spanned 155 kilometers (96 miles) and stood four meters (13 feet) tall.
  • The wall was heavily guarded by armed East German border guards. They had orders to shoot anyone attempting to escape into West Berlin.
  • Over its 28-year history, more than 100 people lost their lives while trying to cross the Berlin Wall.
  • The fall of the Berlin Wall occurred on November 9, 1989, following political changes in Eastern Europe and civil unrest in Germany.
  • East German spokesman Günter Schabowski mistakenly announced that East Germans were free to travel to West Germany. This led to crowds gathering at the checkpoints and eventually crossing the border unrestrictedly.
  • The fall of the Berlin Wall marked a significant step towards the reunification of Germany. This took place on October 3, 1990.

Why Did The Berlin Wall Fall?

The construction of the Berlin Wall was driven by a confluence of political, ideological, and socio-economic factors. Some key reasons other than the berlin war include:

  • Preventing Brain Drain: East Germany faced significant population loss due to skilled workers and professionals defecting to the West. The wall aimed to curb this "brain drain," which was undermining the Eastern Bloc's economic and intellectual resources.
  • Ideological Barrier: The wall aimed to prevent the infiltration of Western capitalist influences into the communist East, reinforcing the divide between the two ideological systems.
  • Stifling Dissent: The East German government used the wall to suppress dissent and prevent citizens from seeking refuge in the more liberal West.

Events That Led to the Fall of the Berlin Wall

The eventual fall of the Berlin Wall was a culmination of a series of events, both internal and external, that unfolded in the late 1980s. These events included:

  • Gorbachev's Reforms: The policies of Mikhail Gorbachev, the leader of the Soviet Union, played a pivotal role. His policy of "glasnost" (openness) and "perestroika" (restructuring) led to increased freedom of speech and political reforms, inspiring similar demands in Eastern Bloc countries.
  • Protests and Unrest: Widespread protests and demonstrations erupted across East Germany, demanding political freedoms, economic reforms, and an end to the oppressive regime. The people's resilience and determination for change were instrumental.
  • Mass Migration: The migration of East Germans to the West through Hungary and Czechoslovakia created a humanitarian crisis, pressuring the East German government to ease restrictions on travel.

  • German Reunification: The wall's demise paved the way for the reunification of East and West Germany in 1990, a historic moment that transformed Europe.
  • Expansion of Democracy: The events surrounding the wall's fall inspired democratic movements in other Eastern Bloc countries, leading to their eventual transition to democracy.
  • European Integration: The reunification of Germany and the thawing of Cold War tensions facilitated European integration, leading to the formation of the European Union.
  • Human Triumph: The fall of the wall showcased the power of peaceful protests and people's aspirations, demonstrating that change can be achieved without resorting to violence.
