The expected application fee for WBPSC WBCS is Rs. 210, excluding applicable service charges and GST. SC and ST candidates from West Bengal, along with PwD candidates (above 40%), are exempt from the fee. BC candidates from West Bengal must pay the full fee, while candidates from other states (SC, ST, BC) are not eligible for any fee exemptions. The fee is non-refundable and cannot be carried forward to any future examinations.

The Prelims Examination consists of 200 multiple-choice questions (MCQs), each question carries 1 Mark. The exam is bilingual, available in both English and Bengali, covering subjects like General Science, Indian History, and Current Events. It is a screening test for the Main Examination, therefore the score of prelims exam won't be counted in the final selection.
The WBCS Main Exam is now more descriptive and detailed than earlier. It includes a total of 10 papers. Among these, two are qualifying papers—Paper A (Bengali/Nepali) and Paper B (English)—each carrying 300 marks. The remaining eight papers, from Paper I to Paper VIII, are counted for merit, with each paper carrying 250 marks. Each paper has a duration of 3 hours. However, candidates applying for Group C and Group D services are not required to appear for the Optional Subject Papers, which are Paper VII and Paper VIII.
Candidates who pass the WBCS Main Exam will be called for an interview based on their merit. In this round, they will be asked simple questions on general topics. The purpose of the test is to understand the candidate’s personal qualities like how alert and clear-thinking they are, how well they can explain things, their honesty, leadership skills, and what kind of interests they have.
