Dr Kamat earned his PhD in Materials Science and Engineering from The Ohio State University, USA, in 1988 after completing his B. Tech. (Hons.) in Metallurgical Engineering at IIT-Kharagpur in 1985. He joined the DRDO in 1989.
Dr Kamat has led and directed a number of crucial material programmes at DRDO, including the development of high-strength steels for naval ship hulls, high-temperature titanium alloys, and nickel base superalloy based components for aero-engines, the development of tungsten heavy alloys for kinetic energy penetrators, the development of fused silica radomes for missile seekers, and the development of armour solutions for personnel as well as combat vehicles and scout vehicles. These have been used in a number of the systems that the DRDO laboratories are creating.
