Megasporogenesis is the process that leads to the formation of megaspores from the megaspore mother cells. These megaspores are developed within the female reproductive organs of a plant.

In most angiosperms, the embryo sac develops from one functional megaspore while the other three degenerate. For example, in plants like Alisma, Ranunculus.
Here, two of the megaspores participate in the formation of the embryo sac. Examples include plants like Plumbago, Primula , and Lilium .
In this case, all four megaspores contribute to the formation of the embryo sac. For instance, in plants like Brassica.
