The material which is to be electroplated:

Electroplating:

• It is the process of coating the surfaces of the components with another metallic coating to achieve the decorative or protective surfaces against corrosion
• The component to be plated is dipped in the electrolyte and made as a cathode as shown in the figure
• The electrolyte supplies the metal ions of materials to be deposited from the anode to the cathode

From the diagram, it is visible that work to be coated is on the cathode.

The preparation of an object for electroplating involves two functions. They are

1. Cleaning Operation:

In case if a metal is to be electroplated,

a) It should be cleaned i.e. metal should be polished

b) Degreased oil or any organic material is to be removed from the metal

c) Inorganic coatings rust, scale, oxides, etc. are to be removed from the metal

2. Plating Operation:

In plating process, the metal or article to be electroplated is arranged as cathode and the anode is made up of the material that is to be deposited on the metal. And salt is taken as solution in which electrodes are immersed
