Conductors for transmission and distribution

In the early day, conductors used on transmission lines were usually copper, but aluminum conductors completely replaced copper because of the much lower cost and lighter weight of aluminum conductors compared with copper conductors of the same resistance.

The conductor material must have low specific gravity.

Low specific gravity means the weight per unit volume of the conductor is small.

Desirable properties of conductor material

  • High conductivity
  • Low specific gravity
  • High tensile strength
  • Light in weight
  • High resistance to corrosion in weather conditions
  • High thermal stability
  • Low coefficient of thermal expansion
  • Low cost
