Researchers at Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST), Srinagar, have successfully produced India’s first gene-edited sheep. The sheep has 30% higher muscle mass, achieved by editing the myostatin gene. The project took four years of research and was sponsored by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). The government is currently in the process of formulating regulations for gene-edited animals, which could pave the way for broader adoption at the farm level.
What is Gene Editing?Gene editing is a scientific technique used to make precise changes to an organism’s DNA. It enables scientists to add, remove, or modify genetic material at specific locations within the genome. Unlike traditional genetic modification (GMO), gene editing does not involve the insertion of foreign DNA, making it potentially more acceptable from a regulatory and consumer perspective. The technique used in this case is CRISPR-Cas9, a Nobel Prize-winning technology that allows targeted and efficient gene edits. |

The Southwest Monsoon arrived in Kerala on May 24, 2025, eight days earlier than normal. It reached Mumbai on May 26, marking the earliest recorded monsoon arrival there. According to the IMD, a key atmospheric driver behind this early onset was the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO).
What is the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO)?The MJO is a large-scale intraseasonal atmospheric disturbance that moves eastward around the equator. It comprises a band of enhanced convection (rainfall and cloudiness) followed by a band of suppressed convection. First identified in 1971 by Roland Madden and Paul Julian at the National Center for Atmospheric Research, USA. |
