The common garden pea, scientifically known as Pisum sativum , is part of the Fabaceae family, often referred to as the pea family. This classification is due to the peas' growth within pods, which technically classifies them as fruits since they contain seeds and originate from the ovary of the pea flower.
The Pisum sativum is just one species within the Pisum genus. Other species within this genus include:
- Rough Pea ( Pisum arvense)
- Field Pea (Pisum arvense)
- Golden Pea (Pisum aureum)
As is typical with other members of the Fabaceae family, peas are legumes and have nitrogen-fixing bacteria in their root nodules. Historically, peas were used for culinary purposes, and are still commercially grown for this purpose today.
