Indeed, we are incredibly fortunate that plants reproduce sexually.

Plants serve as the primary source of nutrition for both humans and animals. Life on Earth would be unimaginable without them.

Sexual Reproduction in Plants

Flowering plants, known as angiosperms, are the most diverse group of plants. Flowers act as the reproductive organs of a plant and can be categorized into two types.

Unisexual flowers - These flowers contain either male or female reproductive organs. Examples include Mango, Corn, and Squash flowers.

Bisexual flowers – These flowers contain both male and female reproductive organs. Examples include Apple, Cherry, and Peony flowers.

The Stages of Sexual Reproduction

Sexual reproduction in flowering plants involves three key stages:

  1. Pollination - This initial stage involves the transfer of pollen grains from the anther to the stigma. Various agents such as wind, water, and animals facilitate this process. Pollination can be self or cross-pollination.
  2. Formation of the Zygote - This stage involves the fusion of male and female gametes to form a zygote, a process known as fertilization.
  3. Formation of Fruit and Seeds - In this final stage, the zygote develops into an embryo, the ovary develops into a fruit, and the ovules become seeds.
