IMPORTANT LINKS
  • Since December 3, 2004, the rules of obtaining Indian citizenship for a child born outside India have changed. The child is not considered an Indian citizen by descent unless their birth is registered at an Indian consulate within one year from their date of birth. However, with the Central Government's permission, this can be done even after the one-year period.
  • The application for registering a minor's birth at an Indian consulate must be accompanied by a written undertaking from the parents. They must affirm that their child does not possess a passport from any other country.
  • Importantly, a minor who holds dual citizenship (India and any other country) by descent must renounce the citizenship of the other country within six months after they become an adult. Failure to do so will result in the loss of their Indian citizenship.
  • Lastly, minor children of Indian citizens can obtain citizenship through registration. An application for the same must be submitted to the Central Government.
