IMPORTANT LINKS

In recent times, various European countries witnessed an unprecedented heatwave whereas, in certain Asian countries like China, the worst deluge of modern times was witnessed. All such events are a direct consequence of global warming and climate change. All the major countries in the world have agreed to tackle these problems through various initiatives like Paris Agreement, International Solar Alliances, etc.

  • Climate change holds utmost importance as the environmental concerns currently are posing as a serious existential crisis for various life forms on this planet.
  • This can lead to an ecological imbalance as well. It is very important for teaching exams aspirants to have a great hold on environmental studies as it is a crucial subject.
  • The questions on the environment are asked in paper 1 of the UGC NET exam and various similar exams.

Global Warming and Climate Change

Global Warming:

  • An increase in the average temperature of the earth’s surface due to the greenhouse effect is called global warming.
  • Global Warming refers to a slow rise in the average temperature of the earth.
  • The main reason for global warming is an exaggerated Greenhouse effect.
  • Carbon dioxide (CO2), Methane (CH4), Nitrous oxide (N2O), Sulphur hexafluoride (SF6), Hydrofluorocarbons (HFC), Perfluorocarbons (PFC) are major Greenhouse gases.

Greenhouse Effect:

  • The greenhouse effect is a naturally occurring phenomenon that is responsible for heating of Earth’s surface and atmosphere.
  • Solar energy is trapped by the earth’s atmosphere and radiates slowly so as to cover our earth with a warm blanket.
  • This is the natural process of the greenhouse effect on earth to maintain its temperature and makes the earth perfect for life.
  • Without the greenhouse effect, the average temperature at the surface of Earth would have been chilly –18oC rather than the present average of 15oC.
  • Carbon dioxide, methane and water vapour are the major greenhouse gases that absorb the infrared radiation from the Earth and re-emit it.
