Types of Environmental Pollutants

Pollutants are classified based on different criteria, including their persistence, nature, disposal characteristics, and origin.

  • Form of Persistence after Release
    • Primary pollutants: These remain in the environment as they were added, like plastic and DDT.
    • Secondary pollutants: These form through interactions between primary pollutants, such as peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN) from hydrocarbon and nitrogen oxide reactions.
  • Nature of Existence
    • Quantitative pollutants: Naturally occurring substances that become pollutants when their concentration exceeds a certain threshold, like nitrogen oxide and carbon dioxide.
    • Qualitative pollutants: Artificial substances that do not exist in nature, like synthetic pesticides.
  • Disposal Nature
    • Biodegradable pollutants: These are waste products that microbial action can degrade, such as sewage.
    • Non-biodegradable pollutants: These do not decompose due to microbial action, like plastics, heavy metal salts, and toxic compounds.
  • Origin
    • Natural pollutants: Cosmic rays and terrestrial radiations from elements found in the Earth's crust.
    • Man-made pollutants: Result from human activities, including nuclear power plants, nuclear weapons, uranium mining, and nuclear waste disposal.

Major Types of Environmental Pollution

Air Pollution

Definition: Air pollution involves the presence of any gaseous, liquid, or solid substance in the atmosphere that can harm humans, other living organisms, property, plants, and disrupt normal environmental processes.

Types of Air Pollutants

  • Suspended Particulate Matter: These are varying compositions that can reduce sunlight and visibility, leading to lung diseases.
  • Gaseous Pollutants: These include carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, sulfur compounds, nitrogen compounds, hydrocarbons, lead, and ozone.

Water Pollution

Definition: Water pollution results from adding substances to water, such as inorganic, heat, biological, organic, and radiological elements, which degrade water quality and make it unfit for consumption.

Sources of Water Pollution

  • Community wastewater: Discharges from commercial, residential, and industrial facilities linked to the public sewerage system.
  • Industrial wastes: Release inorganic and organic contaminants hazardous to living beings.
  • Agricultural sources: Pollutants from excessive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides.
  • Thermal pollution: Caused by power plants dumping hot water.
  • Underground water pollution: From various human activities.
  • Marine pollution: Pollutants discharged into the sea by rivers and coastal cities.

Soil Pollution

Definition: Soil pollution involves introducing substances that harm soil's chemical, biological, and physical properties and reduce productivity.

Sources of Soil Pollution

  • Plastic bags: Non-biodegradable plastics that release toxins.
  • Industrial sources: Chemical residues, fly ash, and metallic waste.
  • Agricultural sources: Chemical fertilizers and pesticides.
  • Radioactive wastes: Nuclear power plants and mining releasing radioactive elements.
  • Other pollutants: Air and water pollutants entering soil.

Noise Pollution

Definition: Noise pollution refers to unwanted sounds produced by people or machines, which can be annoying, distracting, intrusive, or physically painful.

Sources of Noise Pollution

  • Indoor sources: Appliances, vehicles, and family disputes.
  • Outdoor sources: Loudspeakers, industrial activities, traffic, social events, and festivals.

Thermal Pollution

Definition: Thermal pollution is the alteration of natural aquatic temperatures caused by human activities.

Major Sources

  • Power plants: Discharge hot water into water bodies.
  • Deforestation of the shoreline: Removal of shading trees.
  • Water as a cooling agent: Release of cold water.

Radiation Pollution

Definition: Radiation pollution is the increase in natural radiation levels due to human activities, like nuclear power plants and nuclear weapons.

Sources of Radiation Pollution

  • Natural sources: Cosmic rays and terrestrial radiations.
  • Man-made sources: Nuclear activities, uranium mining, and radiation therapy.
