Question
Download Solution PDFPipe A can fill a tank in 771 minutes and Pipe B can fill the same tank in 1542 minutes. If both pipes are opened together, how many minutes will it take to fill the empty tank?
Answer (Detailed Solution Below)
Detailed Solution
Download Solution PDFGiven:
Time taken by Pipe A to fill the tank = 771 minutes
Time taken by Pipe B to fill the tank = 1542 minutes
Formula Used:
Total Work = Time × Efficiency
Calculation:
Let the total capacity be LCM(771, 1542) = 1542 units
Efficiency of Pipe A = 1542/771 = 2
Efficiency of Pipe B = 1542/1542 = 1
Efficiency of Pipe A + Pipe B = 1542/771 = 2 + 1 = 3
Time taken to fill the tank = 1542/3 = 514 minutes
∴ It will take 514 minutes to fill the empty tank when both pipes are opened together.
