Which is common between aerobic respiration and anaerobic respiration?

Respiration is of two types:

• Aerobic respiration- with the use of oxygen. E.g. plants

• The process of glycolysis takes place in the cytoplasm of the cell.

• Glycolysis is the metabolic process that serves as the foundation for both aerobic and anaerobic cellular respiration.
• Glycolysis is the breakdown of glucose (substrate) in the presence or absence of oxygen.
• Hence, the substrate is same for both types of cellular respiration.
• Glucose is a six-membered ring molecule found in the blood and is usually a result of the breakdown of carbohydrates into sugars.
• The final product of glycolysis is pyruvate.

• This is the first stage of respiration and is also called Embden Meyerhof-Path.​
• The pathway for aerobic and anaerobic respiration differs after the formation of pyruvic acid.
• In anaerobic respiration, the pyruvic acid undergoes fermentation to form alcohol or lactic acid (in muscle cells).
• In aerobic respiration, the pyruvic acid enters the Kreb's cycle in the presence of oxygen.
