- An important feature of all living cells is respiration which is related to the liberation of metabolic energy as ATP.
- Respiration is an amphibolic and exergonic cellular process.
Respiration is of two types:
- Aerobic respiration- with the use of oxygen. E.g. plants
- The equation of Aerobic Respiration
- Glucose + Oxygen → Carbon dioxide + Water + Energy
- Anaerobic respiration- without the use of oxygen. Eg yeast
- The equation of Anaerobic Respiration
- Glucose → Alcohol + Carbon dioxide + Energy
Explanation-
- The process of glycolysis takes place in the cytoplasm of the cell.
- Glycolysis is the metabolic process that serves as the foundation for both aerobic and anaerobic cellular respiration.
- Glycolysis is the breakdown of glucose (substrate) in the presence or absence of oxygen.
- Hence, the substrate is same for both types of cellular respiration.
- Glucose is a six-membered ring molecule found in the blood and is usually a result of the breakdown of carbohydrates into sugars.
- The final product of glycolysis is pyruvate.
C6H12O6 + 2 NAD+ + 2 ADP + 2 Pi → 2 pyruvic acid (CH3COCOOH)+ 2 ATP + 2 NADH + 2 H+
- This is the first stage of respiration and is also called Embden Meyerhof-Path.
- The pathway for aerobic and anaerobic respiration differs after the formation of pyruvic acid.
- In anaerobic respiration, the pyruvic acid undergoes fermentation to form alcohol or lactic acid (in muscle cells).
- In aerobic respiration, the pyruvic acid enters the Kreb's cycle in the presence of oxygen.
Therefor, all the given options are common for aerobic and anaerobic respiration.
