The captain of a football team of 11 members is 28 years old and the goalkeeper is 4 years older than him. If the ages of these two are removed, then the average age of the remaining players is two years less than the average age of the whole team. What is the average age of the team?

Calculation:

Let the sum of age of all the team members except both be x years.

Captain's age is 28 years.

Age of goalkeeper is 32 years.

Average age of the team =(x + 28 + 32) ÷ 11 = (x + 60) ÷ 11 

Average age of the team without captain and goalkeeper = x ÷ 9

ATQ: (x + 60) ÷ 11 - 2 = x ÷ 9

⇒ 9x + 540 - 2 × 11 × 9 = 11x

⇒ 2x = 540 - 198 = 342

⇒ x = 171

⇒ Average age of the team = (171 + 60) ÷ 11 = 231 ÷ 11 = 21

Hence, average age of the whole team is 21 years.
