Nyaya Philosophy:
- It is one of the six systems of Indian Philosophy.
- Gautama is the main proponent of Nayaya philosophy.
- The four Pramanas of Nyaya philosophy is perception, inference, analogical reasoning and testimony.
- Pratigya or proposition: It is the logical statement which is to be proved.
- For example: The hill is fiery.
- Hetu or reason: which states the reason for the establishment of the proposition.
- For example: Because the hill is smoky.(hetu)
- Udharana: which gives the universal concommitance together with an example.
- For example: whatever is smoky is fiery, e.g. a kitchen.
- Upanaya: the application of the universal concommitance to the present case.
- For example: This hill is also smoky.
- Nigamana: conclusion drawn from the preceding propositions.
- For example: Therefore this hill is fiery.
These five propositions of the Indian syllogism are called members or avayavas.
