Key Points

Kerala ranks in the number 1 position for the highest literacy rate in India. The Literacy Rate of the state as per the 2011 Census is 93.91 per cent.
National Statistical Office (NSO) published a report on 'Household Social Consumption: Education', surveying 1.13 lakh households spread over 8,000 villages and 6,000 urban blocks.
The report is based on the data collected between 2017-18 and is for the age group 7 or above.
As per the report, Kerala is the most literate state in the country while Andhra Pradesh has emerged as the least literate state in the country.
As per the 2011 census, the Literacy rate of India is 74.04%.
Male literacy rate = 80.9%.
Female literacy rate = 64.63%.
The top five states and UTs where the literacy rate is the highest, are Kerala (94%), Lakshadweep (91.8%), Mizoram (91.3%), and Goa (88.7%) and Tripura (87.2%).
While of Daman and Diu = 87.1%, Chandigarh = 86.4%, Andaman and Nicobar Islands = 86.6%.
