The toughness test is conducted to study the behavior of the material under dynamic load conditions (at a high rate of loading).
Two tests are there for toughness test:
- Charpy Impact test
- Izod impact test
Izod test:
- In the Izod test the specimen is positioned like a cantilever beam i.e. one end is fixed and the other is free.
- At the center of specimen V notch is created to initiate crack.
- The notch angle of the Izod impact test specimen is 45°
- The Izod test gives nonuniform stress distribution because of cantilever arrangement and hence is not more accurate.
Charpy test:
- The Charpy geometry consists of a simply supported beam with a centrally applied load on the reverse side of beam from the notch.
- The notch serves to create a stress concentration and to produce a constrained multiaxial state of tension a small distance below the bottom of Notch.
