National food security act was passed on 10th September 2013.

  1. The Act covers up to 75% of the rural population and up to 50% of the urban population's subsidized food grains under the Targeted Public Distribution System (TPDS).
  2. The eligible persons will be entitled to receive 5 Kg of foodgrains per person per month at subsidized prices of Rs. 3 for rice, Rs. 2 for wheat, and, Rs.1 for coarse grains.
  3. According to the existing Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY), households will continue to receive 35 Kg of foodgrains per household per month.
  4. The Act also has a special focus on nutritional support for women and children.
  5. Besides food to pregnant women and lactating mothers during pregnancy and six months after childbirth, they will also be entitled to receive a maternity benefit of Rs. 6,000.
  6. Children up to 14 years of age will be entitled to nutritious meals as per the prescribed nutritional standards.
