Concepts:

A lag time is the amount of time whereby a successor activity or event is required to be delayed with respect to a predecessor activity or event. In other words, when the first activity completes, and there is a delay before the second activity starts, called lag. Therefore, it is earliest time by which a successor event can follow a specific PERT event.

For example, let we have to paint a room. The first activity is applying the primer coating, and then we will do the final painting. However, we must let the primer dry before applying the paint. Hence, we start our final painting two days after applying the primer. The time given for the coating to dry is called the lag time.

The time by which a predecessor event must be completed in order to allow sufficient time for the activities that must elapse before a specific PERT event reaches completion is called lead time
