Over Current Relays are preferred for low voltage transmission lines because:
- It has the inherent property of variable distance and variable operating time due to changes in fault impedance and operating voltage.
- It means the operation time of overcurrent relays increases as fault impedance and operating voltage increase. For higher values of voltage and fault impedance, over current relay takes more time to respond from the time, the fault occurs.
Important PointsDue to these disadvantages, overcurrent relays is replaced by distance relays for the protection of high voltage transmission lines.
