Conditions in a war-torn Gaza is extremely dire. Girls in Gaza are forced to cut their hair as they face a severe scarcity of items like combs, soap, etc. With the ten months of conflict, a war-torn Gaza struggles with shortage of basic necessities.

Gaza pediatrician, Dr. Lobna al-Azaiza advised the girls to cut off their hair when they complained to her. Matter in Gaza is now not just about combs, israel’s seize of Gaza has left it with no hygiene materials. Essentials like combs, shampoo, soap, household cleaning or period products are less in number.

Shortage of soap and water compounds health woes

As a result of shortage of hygiene items, diseases are constantly on rise and health of people are severely impacted. The waste collection and sewage treatment system has fallen and people are prone to contagious diseases like scabies and fungal infections.

Azaiza said that skin problems have increased in the past period due to “Overcrowding  in the camps, the increased heat inside the tents, the sweating among children…”

No immediate solution

She works with her team to provide medications to people in need amid scarcity of resources and risk of israeli attacks. Azaiza began treating childrens’ first in her tent clinic and now those families who were bombed out of their house. Gaza’s crisis has resulted in costlier treatments and medications, unaffordable for many. Ever since the takeover of the Rafah border by Israel, the international aid deliveries have subsequently reduced.

Azaiza said that the border crossing must open for bringing in medications.
