New Delhi: According to the most recent prediction made by betting exchange company Smarkets, UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss has a 90% probability of beating former chancellor Rishi Sunak to succeed Boris Johnson as the next Prime Minister.
According to Smarkets, Sunak’s chances of becoming the next prime minister have dropped to 10%, while Truss has an approval rating of 89.29% and other candidates have chances of less than 1%.
The final two contenders for the position of UK Prime Minister squared off in a debate on Thursday in Leeds in front of members of the conservative party. It was the candidates’ first official grilling.
In her most recent debate, Truss stated that she preferred not to impose more windfall taxes on oil and gas corporations, which turned out to be the reason why her prospects of winning have developed as they have.
As the members pick a new leader, both contenders must endure 12 nationwide contests, with the first contest taking place in Leeds, Northern England.
On September 5, the results will be made public.
Former Chancellor Sunak had a difficult time during the hustings because of his lifestyle and dishonesty toward Prime Minister Boris Johnson, while Truss had a fantastic time because she had the most support for the position of Prime Minister.
Surveys of Conservative members show that Truss is in the lead after promising urgent tax cuts as Britain deals with a decline in living standards.
She also promised to push for the construction of the Northern Powerhouse rail while addressing party members, stating that Leeds is the “biggest city in Europe without its own metro system.”
On the other hand, Rishi Sunak, when asked about tax hikes and Truss leading the race after she announced immediate tax cuts, he said, “In the face of challenges, understand to get a grip of inflation and borrowing first,” adding that the government has already tried having low corporation tax to get businesses to invest and it hasn’t worked. Earlier, the YouGov survey also revealed that Truss extends its lead over Rishi Sunak as she gained 24-points.
A recent YouGov poll of Tory members indicates that Truss still has a significant lead now that the two had finally made their announcement and their summer campaign had started.
Rishi Sunak will receive 31% of the members’ votes, while Liz Truss will receive 49%, according to the survey.
Currently, 15% of voters are still undecided about their vote, and 6% have indicated they will abstain.
After excluding those who are still undecided or won’t vote, this results in a headline voting intention of 62% for Truss and 38% for Sunak, giving the foreign secretary a 24-point lead.’
Johnson’s forced resignation on July 7 amid a wave of resignations from government officials in protest of his scandal-plagued leadership set off the Tory leadership contest.
Up until a new Tory leader takes over, Johnson will remain the caretaker prime minister.
