Israel: Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid on Thursday conceded defeat to Benjamin Netanyahu and congratulated him on his “victory” following national elections held on Tuesday.

“Prime Minister Lapid congratulated Opposition Leader Netanyahu on his victory in the elections, and updated him that he has instructed his entire office to prepare an organised transition of power,” a statement from Lapid’s office said, as reported by AFP.

The general elections were held on November 1 with the country going to the polls for the fifth time in less than four years

According to the latest updates from the Central Elections Committee, Netanyahu’s Likud party will receive 31 seats, Prime Minister Yair Lapid’s Yesh Atid 24, Religious Zionism 14, National Unity 12, Shas 11 and United Torah Judaism will have eight seats.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulates Netanyahu on his success in the elections.

“Congratulations my friend @netanyahu on your success in the elections. I look forward to continuing our joint efforts to deepen the strategic partnership between India and Israel,” PM Modi said in a tweet in Hebrew.

Born in Tel Aviv in 1949, Netanyahu holds the record of being the longest-serving Prime Minister in the country’s history.
