The Ministry of External Affairs responded to the Iranian attack by expressing serious concern about the escalation of hostilities between Israel and Iran, emphasizing the threat it poses to peace and security in the region.

Additionally, the Ministry called for immediate de-escalation, urging all parties to exercise restraint, refrain from violence, and return to the path of diplomacy. According to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), Iran launched over 200 missiles and drones directly towards Israeli territory in the early hours of Sunday.

Iran’s unprecedented attack was a retaliatory measure following the April 1 airstrike on its consulate in Damascus, which resulted in the deaths of seven Revolutionary Guards, including two commanders, and six Syrian civilians. However, Israel has not officially acknowledged responsibility for the airstrike.

The IDF also reported that they intercepted the “vast majority” of the missiles and drones launched by Iran. However, they acknowledged that a few “small hits” occurred in southern Israel, resulting in minor damage to infrastructure.

In response to the attack, US President Joe Biden reaffirmed Washington’s unwavering support for Israel’s security, emphasizing that the United States “will stand with the people of Israel and support their defense against these threats from Iran.”
