The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) officially declared the demise of Lashkar-e-Taiba‘s founding member, Hafiz Abdul Salam Bhuttavi, who served as the deputy to Hafiz Saeed. The announcement came on Thursday, shedding light on Bhuttavi’s significant role in the 2008 Mumbai attacks and his passing in May 2023.

Hafiz Abdul Salam Bhuttavi played a crucial role in the infamous 26/11 Mumbai attacks orchestrated by LeT. The four-day terror spree resulted in the loss of 166 lives and left 300 injured. Notably, Hafiz Saeed, also a UN-proscribed terrorist, faces extradition requests from the Indian government.

According to the UNSC, Bhuttavi, aged 77, succumbed to cardiac arrest on May 29, 2023, while under the custody of the Pakistani government. The UN’s press note, available on its official website, provided details on Bhuttavi’s demise and his connection to LeT’s activities.

Hafiz Abdul Salam Bhuttavi assumed leadership responsibilities during the period when Hafiz Saeed was detained following the Mumbai terror attacks. Saeed was released in June 2009 but is currently serving a 78-year imprisonment sentence in Pakistan for his role in the attacks.
