Washington: Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said the company doesn’t plan to order corporate employees to return to the office anytime soon.

“We don’t have a plan to require people to come back,” Jassy said on stage Wednesday at the Code Conference in Los Angeles. “We don’t right now. But we’re going to proceed adaptively as we learn.”

Jassy said last October that Amazon would leave it up to individual managers to decide how often workers would be required to come into the office. “There is no one-size-fits all approach for how every team works best,” he said.

Most employees have returned to physical offices and are spending some days working from home, Jassy said Wednesday, adding that certain teams tend to be at the office more often, such as hardware or creative units, while others, such as engineers, continue to work largely remotely.

“I do think there are some things that are harder to do remotely,” Jassy said. “I think it’s a little harder to invent remotely.”

The online giant CEO’s stance presents a different approach than most of the CEOs in the tech and corporate world who are making efforts to bring workers back to the office.

Online search platform Google started requiring its employees to spend three days a week in the office from April this year, while Apple’s plan to institute a similar requirement faced pushback from employees. Later, the company told its employees to come into the office three days a week starting this month.
