Take A Look At This Twisted Spiral Galaxy Captured By Hubble

Hubble captured the dazzling spiral galaxy, called Arp 184 or NGC 1961, a warped beauty 190 million light-years away in the constellation Camelopardalis (The Giraffe).

The name Arp 184 comes from the Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies compiled by astronomer Halton Arp in 1966. It holds 338 oddly shaped galaxies.

Arp 184 earned its spot in the catalog thanks to its single broad, star-speckled spiral arm that appears to stretch toward us.

This Hubble image of Arp 184 blends data from three Snapshot programs, captured in brief gaps between other observations.

The program surveyed galaxies from Halton Arp’s peculiar galaxy catalogs, including both his Atlas and the southern catalogue co-authored with Barry Madore.

Arp 184, home to four supernovae in 30 years, is a key target for Snapshot programs studying the violent aftermath of cosmic events.
