To the general public, Labubu is a blind-box artist doll from Pop Mart’s “The Monsters” series originally imagined by artist Kasing Lung. The intentionally creepy-cute appearance of the doll with big eyes, pointed teeth, and fuzzy ears is cult, particularly among Gen Z collectors and toy figures’ fans. In India, that craziness has taken on its own cultural twist, one where the strange turns wondrous and the unheimlich turns bhabhi.
What is interesting is the way this little, eerie character is now being utilized as a tool of creativity and cultural expression. It’s no longer just an easy collectible any more, Labubu is now a personality, a meme, even a bride. As the Labubu Bhabhi mania gathers momentum, it’s a testament to a very Indian method of accepting trends, with humor, sentiment, and plenty of desi drama.
In a world filled with sleek influencers and perfect appearances, Labubu Bhabhi stands out as the oddity, loud, quirky, humorous and that’s why everyone is falling in love with her.
