New Delhi: WhatsApp, which is owned by Meta has announced that it had banned over 23 lakh accounts in India during the month of August in accordance with the new IT Rules, 2021.

The messaging service got 598 complaint reports in India during the month of August, with 27 of those records being “actioned” (according to third-party statistics), while the platform has approximately 500 million users worldwide.

“Over the years, we have consistently invested in Artificial Intelligence and other state-of-the-art technology, data scientists and experts and in processes, in order to keep our users safe on our platform. In accordance with the IT Rules 2021, WhatsApp banned over 2.3 million (2,328,000) accounts in the month of August,” said a company spokesperson.

In India in July, the site had similarly almost as many bad accounts banned.

Major digital and social media sites with more than five million users must provide monthly compliance reports under the updated IT Rules 2021.

The Centre informed the Supreme Court this week that the disputed Personal Data Protection (PDP) Bill 2019 has been withdrawn and a comprehensive data protection Bill is being created during a hearing challenging the privacy policy of the instant messaging app WhatsApp.

In an effort to create a new, more focused Bill that fits into the entire legal framework and safeguards the data of billions of persons, the Center withdrew the Bill that had undergone 81 revisions in the previous three years in August.

Due to the fact that the industry would use data almost exclusively, a new draught of the data protection Bill is being created to improve efficient data usage.
