‘Mean’ Mike Masters, also known as Mike “Rocky” Jones, was a star performer in WWE (then WWF) and New Japan Pro-Wrestling in the 1970s and 80s.

In his glorious career, he was a leading name in wrestling entertainment territories and then went on to pass his knowledge to the next generation of wrestlers.

Mike Masters died after a long battle with throat cancer. Masters was 68 years old at the time of his death. According to a report, he had beaten cancer previously, but it returned. After the recurrence, he spent a period of time in the hospital battling it.

Mike Masters’ legendary wrestling career

Mike masters initially performed under the name Mike Jones. Under the name Mike Masters, he competed in WWF and faced top stars like Hulk Hogan, Larry Zbyszko, and even The Wild Samoans.

Masters challenged Ken Patera for the Intercontinental Championship in October 1979 but was unable to get the win.

Outside WWE, He wrestled stars like Stan Stasiak, Tom Prichard, and The Rock’s father, Rocky Johnson.

In New Japan Pro Wrestling, Mike faced some of the big names again, like Hulk Hogan and Riki Choshu, and teamed up with Stan Hansen, Tiger Jeet Singh, and Sgt. Slaughter.

Mike would also wrestle for Killer Kowalski’s International Wrestling Federation under the name Rocky Jones. After ending his career as a wrestler he opened a wrestling school and trained multiple top names. Former WWE and ECW star James “Little Guido” Maritato was taught by him.
