When Harry Met Lucky: Was It Entirely Harry Brook’s Class That Took Him To 99?

Brook's luck finally ran out after being dropped twice, once by India's deputy captain, Rishabh Pant.

England batter and world number 2 in Tests, Harry Brook just missed by a run from claiming a potential century against the Indians in the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy 2025. During the first match at Headingley, after smashing a thunderous six to Prasidh Krishna, Brook threw away his wicket by attempting the same shot, leading to Shardul Thakur taking a comfortable catch. It seemed like Brook’s luck finally ran out after being dropped twice, once by India’s deputy captain, Rishabh Pant. Brook has been dropped 13 times in Test cricket out of 26 fair deliveries in Tests from the past 12 months.

Dropped 13 Times

According to ESPN, there have been 13 instances where  Harry Brook’s catches were dropped in Tests in the past 12 months, out of 26 chances off legal deliveries. No other batter has been let off as often in this period. Brook was dropped twice during his 99 against India in Headingley and was also caught off a no-ball. Brook became the 14th England batter to be dismissed on 99 and the first since Jonny Bairstow against South Africa at Old Trafford in 2017. Bairstow had an unbeaten 99 at the same venue against Australia in 2023. He also registered another shameful record by becoming the third batter to get dismissed on 99 on this pitch.

Indians Innings Tremble In 2nd Half

India wrapped up the English innings on 465 runs and got a lead of just 6 runs to start the second innings. India’s star opener and centurion from the first innings, Yashasvi Jaiswal, could not create an impact with the bat in the second session. He went back to the hut on just 4 runs. Meanwhile, KL Rahul reaches a crucial half-century after giving a strong start to India in the first innings with his 42-run contribution. Captain Shubman Gill also went back to the pavilion without much resistance in the second innings. It was Brydon Carse who departed by the centurions back. The Headingley weather saw some rain showers as well during day 3.
