South Africa’s Wiaan Mulder made history this day at Queens Sports Club by being the first-ever player to make a triple-century on captaincy debut in Tests. He was about to surpass the Trinidadian legend Brian Lara to take the record for most Test runs in a match. South Africa declared the innings at 626/5 with Mulder himself on the crease on 367*. Lara has a record of 400*. He missed this stunning record but became the ninth captain in the longest version to break the 300-run barrier and the first since 2014. None of the other batters in the Tests have ever reached such a milestone other than Mulder and Lara.
Brendon McCullum of New Zealand was the previous captain who had scored a triple hundred against India in Wellington. Additionally, he is the first captain since 1998 to record a triple ton overseas in Tests. He has also left behind the Indian captain Shubman Gill, who smashed 269 and 161 in the first and second innings respectively during the second Test match at Edgbaston and was constantly in the headlines.
