Details On Retention And Squad Composition

According to the BCCI rules defined, each WPL team can have a squad featuring 18 members, and up to six overseas players. As is in the Indian Premier League (IPL), the franchises can also let go of the players every year. After the retention period, BCCI would conduct a mini-auction and the auction date has not yet been declared. The auction purse for the third edition to be played in the future is INR 15 crores, which during its opening season was of INR 12 crores, and then in the second season, it was INR 13.5 crores.

Future Plans For The WPL

The third season, to be held next year may welcome the mega-auction along with a new team. To cope with contemporary trends like IPL, BCCI will have to enforce a retention policy on WPL as well. Today, the league comprises five teams.

Season 3 Timeline And Venues

The BCCI has not yet issued fixed dates and venues for the third edition, but it is likely to follow a similar February-March window as the previous two installments. Franchises have indicated they expect a similar timeline, given that the final senior women’s domestic fixtures conclude in mid-January.

Venues, the BCCI could again opt to host the third edition at two locations like the second season was played at Bengaluru and New Delhi. The first season was entirely played in Mumbai.

Teams And Championship History

The WPL franchises are five: Delhi Capitals, Gujarat Giants, Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and UP Warriorz. Mumbai Indians are the champions for the year 2023 while the last season’s winners are Smriti Mandhana’s Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

This season extension would give the teams more time to determine who makes up their final rosters, so gear up for a thrilling season of Women’s Premier League.
