The season came to a close for Real Madrid with a 2-0 win over Real Sociedad in Madrid. It was Kylian Mbappé who shone, scoring the first goal when Sociedad’s goalkeeper saved his penalty shot and the second when he was set up by Vinicius in the second half. Even so, the evening was mostly about Luka Modric and Lucas Vazquez, along with Ancelotti, who got heartwarming goodbyes from the Bernabéu supporters. Most of the time, Madrid held the ball and decided the tempo, but Sociedad came back at them briefly.
Real Sociedad’s Shortcomings
Despite some clear-cut opportunities, Real Sociedad failed to score, as Sergio Gomez missed wide during the first half and Marin headed the ball over from a free kick. While their play improved once they gained possession after scoring an own goal, the team still had trouble in the last third. As Real Sociedad fumbled their chances and their set pieces didn’t work, the game was largely managed by Real Madrid in the middle of the park.
What Sociedad Could Have Done Differently
A higher score would have come for Sociedad if they were sharper in front of goal, taking advantage of their quick start. It might have helped if Aranzubia had brought on Oyarzabal and Barrenetxea before the 70th minute. Putting pressure on Madrid near their goal and taking advantage of any small mistakes in their defense could have opened up better scoring opportunities. Better passing accuracy and smarter moves in the final part of the field played a big role in forcing chances and turning possession into genuine pressure.
