IPL 2026 Trade Window: Is It The End Of The Road For Venkatesh Iyer? Why KKR May Target Mohammed Shami And Ishan Kishan

The 2024 champions are reportedly negotiating to exchange Venkatesh Iyer for leading pacer Mohammed Shami and wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan from Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).

With the IPL 2026 trade window gathering momentum, sources familiar with franchise insiders indicate that two-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are planning one of the most tantalising off-season moves. The 2024 champions are reportedly negotiating to exchange Venkatesh Iyer for leading pacer Mohammed Shami and wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan from Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).

Although the transaction is in its initial exploration phases, it surprises everyone in the cricketing world both by its audacity and its ability to fundamentally alter team dynamics.

Time to Cash In on Venkatesh Iyer?

Venkatesh Iyer has been a divisive presence at KKR. Following his breakout campaign in 2021, he’s had moments of brilliance but hasn’t been able to replicate consistency with bat or ball in subsequent seasons. Venkatesh Iyer scored only 234 runs and took four wickets in 10 games in IPL 2025 good, but not game-altering.

KKR may see this as the time to get rid of him when he is still worth something. With younger local all-rounders coming through, the administration may be set to reshuffle their spine.

Why Shami and Kishan?

At his age, Shami is still India’s most consistent new-ball fast bowler. His SRH IPL 2025 season was justifiably impressive 17 wickets from 13 matches, testing top-order batsmen consistently. KKR’s pace attack, barring the promising Harshit Rana, was toothless last season. Recruiting Shami would bring instant experience, control, and aggression.

With Rahmanullah Gurbaz’s form declining in 2025, KKR need a consistent wicket-keeper who can also conquer in the powerplay. Ishan Kishan, as much as he has had a hot-and-cold SRH campaign, is still one of the most destructive left-handed openers of Indian cricket. His capacity to turn matches within a few overs makes him an attractive proposition, particularly at Eden Gardens, where the ground’s patchy nature tends to encourage aggressive stroke-play.

What’s in It for SRH?

SRH, in buying Venkatesh Iyer, might resolve a particular problem, they’ve not had a true seam-bowling all-rounder who can float in the order. With Abhishek Sharma, Heinrich Klaasen, and Aiden Markram having the top-heavy batting order, Venkatesh would be able to add balance, particularly if utilized strategically at No. 3 or No. 4.

Further, SRH may be willing to part ways with Shami and Kishan because of the rise of new, young bowlers such as Umran Malik and the unsettled nature of Kishan in their XI.

Trade Effect

If the big-ticket deal gets cleared, it will change the complexion of both teams. KKR will solve two apparent issues pace department and top-order firepower, while SRH will receive a multi-talented Indian who provides flexibility to their playing XI.

Although no confirmation has been issued by either franchise, there are several reports indicating there has been discussion and that both camps are considering feasibility, finances, and long-term compatibility.
