The match between Man United and Lyon ended with United winning 5-4 through extra time while also resulting in dramatic last-minute scoring situations in the 2nd leg of the UEFA Europa League quarter-final. The game went in United’s favour during the first two goals of Ugarte and Dalot which gave them a 2-0 advantage before halftime began. The Lyon team launched a comeback that included goals from Tolisso and Tagliafico and Cherki in their victorious quest to achieve a 3-2 advantage. During extra time both teams scored penalties and goals until Mainoo produced an incredible equaliser and Maguire put the match away with his header during stoppage time. United secured their victory through Casemiro’s two vital assists in what turned out to be a thrilling match.
Lyons Shortcomings Which Resulted In Them Losing The Match
Despite making a strong rally Lyon struggled with defensive coordination for the match. Lyon let in five goals throughout their match and surrendered two additional goals in added time of extra time because their team management abilities failed under tense moments. Lyon’s defence struggled to deal with United’s aerial attacking strategy during corner kicks. Both Tolisso and other midfielders lost their composure in key moments and their risky tackles resulted in penalties against Lyon. Lyon also experienced uncontrolled moments in the game when Tolisso received a red card. Their rhythm suffered major disruptions due to injuries and delayed replacements putting them at higher risk in critical moments.

What Could Have Helped Lyon Win The Match
During extra time Lyon should have strengthened their defence to prevent United from scoring through their poor marking. A higher defensive press from Lyon would have created difficulties for United’s control of the game especially among their central players including Casemiro. The match’s result would have been different if Lyon made defence-focused tactical subs at an earlier stage because it provided fresh legs to halt United’s late attacking push. Lyon could have maintained their position against Man United by displaying discipline in crucial areas and avoiding unnecessary fouls that gave United an advantage to claim victory.
