Thakur to Root, 1 run, Root loves to steer to third man and India are offering a run there for him at the moment. Bends his knees to play his trademark guide as Shardul bowls short of length with some width
The Indian captain Shubman Gill blasted a century as the visitors posted 359/3 in the 1st Test, which was against England at Leeds. At one stage, Gill and his deputy Rishabh Pant were not out on 127 and 65 respectively. Ben Stokes had earlier sent off centurion Yashasvi Jaiswal soon after the resumption of the final session. India went to lunch in Leeds at 92/2, with Gill still batting alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal, who was inching towards a half-century. During the opening stand, Jaiswal and KL Rahul added 91 runs in Headingley in the first session. It was, however, England who finished the session positively by taking two wickets in five balls. India newcomer B Sai Sudharsan was dismissed after a four-ball duck.
India Playing XI: Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Shubman Gill (c), Rishabh Pant (wk), Karun Nair, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna.
England Playing XI: Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (c), Jamie Smith (wk), Chris Woakes, Brydon Carse, Josh Tongue, Shoaib Bashir.
Siraj to Pope, no run, good length and tight on off, Pope gets forward to defend to cover, the fielder is in quickly and there's no chance of a quick single
Prasidh to Root, 3 runs, full and angling into off, Root gets forward and shows the full face of the bat to play a lovely on-drive, Bumrah at mid-on chases and is helped by Gill, the batters still take three
Siraj to Root, no run, full outside off, shapes away, Root leans forward and cover-drives well but picks out cover
Siraj to Root, FOUR, can't bowl there. Full and sliding down leg, Root flicks through square-leg which is open and the crowd go to the familiar chant of Rooooooootttttttttttttttt as the ball runs away
Siraj to Root, no run, beaten! So close to the outside-edge. The shiny side is pointing towards fine-leg and this moves away after pitching, so conventional swing for now, angled in on a fourth-stump line, back of a length and again Root was beaten as he played for the original line, very close to taking the edge
Bumrah to Duckett, out Bowled!! Thick inside-edge and Bumrah makes the breakthrough. He has a smile and a word or two at Duckett who walks off. Full outside off, Duckett gets forward to drive big, it's a thick inside-edge and goes back on to middle-stump.
Bumrah to Pope, FOUR, 50 for Pope. Streaky way to get there, but he gets it. A short of length delivery outside off, Pope cuts late and it's right in the gap between third slip and gully, went at a catchable height
Jadeja to Duckett, FOUR, Stokes and Root clap the 100-run stand. Also 50 for Duckett. He gives the thumbs up to the dressing room. It's full outside off, Duckett brings out the sweep and hits it hard, beats the running and diving Jaiswal to his left at deep backward square-leg
Siraj to Pope, no run, short of length and tight on off, Pope gets right behind the line and defends to the left of Siraj
Siraj to Duckett, 1 run, short down leg, Duckett doesn't time the pull but gets it down to fine-leg
Prasidh to Duckett, FOUR, cracking shot. It's a short of length delivery just outside off, not a bad ball, but Duckett is so good with the pull, he goes on the back foot and pulls dismissively to the deep mid-wicket fence
Prasidh to Duckett, 1 run, Prasidh goes round the wicket and angles one on the pads, length and flicked to deep backward square-leg
Prasidh to Pope, FOUR, full outside off, shapes away, Pope gets forward and unfurls a gorgeous cover-drive, that races away, gives no chance to Bumrah this time, as it speeds away to his right, consecutive fours for Pope as he ends the over on a high
Prasidh to Duckett, FOUR, signature stroke from Duckett! He's not going to let the pressure faze him, short of length on middle-leg, Duckett stays deep in his crease and gets under it before jabbing it over mid-wicket, one-bounce and four
Bumrah to Duckett, no run, dropped! You don't see Jadeja dropping many, not at backward point but he's put this one down! Length delivery just outside off, Duckett stayed inside the line and slashed hard, didn't keep it down and it went quickly to Jadeja's right, at a decent catch-able hieght too but down it went. Jadeja is absolutely livid with himself
Bumrah to Duckett, FOUR, another edge that goes into the gap! Will go down as a drop! England are riding their luck! Good length delivery slanting across outside off, gets Duckett pushing at it again and it catches a thick outside edge, goes to Jaiswal's right at gully, he put in a full length dive to his right and it just about carried, couldn't hold on one-handed though and it went down to the boundary
Siraj to Duckett, FOUR, that'll get his juices flowing! Siraj isn't quite backing Bumrah up here, overpitched on off-stump, Duckett prods forward and creams it straight back down the ground with the full face of the bat, comfortably beat mid-off to his left
Siraj to Pope, FOUR, that's nicely played! Full and just outside off, nips away just a touch, Pope gets forward and just opens the face of the bat as he steers it towards backward point, gets it past the man and it runs down to the ropes
Bumrah to Crawley, out Caught by Karun Nair!! That is absolutely unplayable! Call it magic, call it wizardry, call it other wordly because that is simply stunning from Bumrah. Crawley can only put his head down and walk off, nothing he could've done about that, absolutely nothing. Good length delivery angling into middle-leg
Josh Tongue to Prasidh, out Bowled!! The leg-stump has gone for a walk. Josh Tongue fist-pumps in delight. That's the end of the innings as well. There's rain in the air as well. The Hover-cover is coming on. Full and curving back into the leg-stump, Prasidh makes room and drives, looks to go hard, misses and the leg-stump has taken a beating. Four for Josh Tongue and India have been bowled out for 471.
Brydon Carse to Jadeja, FOUR, now Jadeja will play his shots. He comes down the track and takes it on the half-volley, lofts cleanly and easily clears mid-on, one bounce over the ropes
Josh Tongue to Bumrah, out Caught by Brook!! Edged and gone. Full and swinging away from outside off, Bumrah gets forward to drive and the thick outside edge flies at a comfortable height to 2nd slip where Brook takes an easy catch. Generally Bumrah plays with an open face and that proved to be his undoing. England continue their good work from the morning.
Stokes to Thakur, out Caught by Jamie Smith!! Edged and gone! The England captain is on fire and making the ball move places. Nice outie outside off stump, Shardul had a full go at the drive. Wasn't as full so it found the outside edge for Smith to take an easy catch to the right. Number four for Stokes. Thakur c Jamie Smith b Stokes 1(8)
Josh Tongue to Pant, out Lbw!! Brainfade to end a fantastic innings. Josh Tongue got it to curve back in late and quite sharply. He was troubling Pant with inswing from round the wicket since last over. Pant thought this wouldn't come straight at him and offered no shot. But it wasn't as wide or as short for the ball to escape the stumps or his body
Stokes to Karun Nair, out Caught by Pope!! In the airrrr and a stunner from Pope at short cover. This ball was flying but he dived full length to his left and took with both hands overhead. He was almost horizontal to the ground when he caught the ball. Slight bit of tentativeness costing Karun his wicket. This was a full outswinger wide of off stump. The drive was on but the problem was Karun wasn't fully onto that shot. Had he played normally he would have cleared the infield.
Stokes to Pant, FOUR, get out of my sight shot from Pant! Stokes is getting outswing so he tried a fullie but it was slightly overpitched and lit up Pant's eyes, who seized the chance to drill a hard drive to the left of mid-off
Bashir to Gill, out Caught by Josh Tongue at deep mid-wicket!! He wanted to get his 150 in style but he's dragged this big hit squarer than intended and it's taken at deep square leg. Headingley rises to its feet to give a great ovation as Gill walks off with a raised bat. Photographers gather near the boundary to capture the Indian captain heading off after a great innings. This was a flighted delivery, Gill stepped out got big slog-flick as mid-wicket was open in the deep. But the ball went off the inner half of the bat and flew straight to deep square leg. Gill c Josh Tongue b Bashir 147(227) [4s-19 6s-1]
Bashir to Pant, SIX, a one-handed six to get his 7th Test hundred. He woke up against RCB late in the IPL and he's carried on here as well. Back-to-back Test hundreds in England. This is his format. Generally takes the pitch and opposition out of the equation
Bashir to Pant, SIX, that's one way to get into the 90s! Fraction short on middle-leg, Pant goes deep in his crease before mowing it over deep mid-wicket, that went 20 rows back! He's put the spinner under pressure straightaway
Woakes to Gill, FOUR, this time he gets it away! Gill had been eyeing that vacant third man region for a while now, short of length and outside off, bit more width on offer this time and Gill just used the pace to dab it into the gap, as easy as you like
Brydon Carse to Gill, 1 run, back of a length on off-stump, pulled down and past mid-wicket, was off the front-foot and he was in full control again, there's a man down in the deep and he keeps it to one. Gill continues to play the short ball really well
Brydon Carse to Pant, FOUR, nicely played! The runs are flowing easily for Pant this morning, length delivery slanting across outside off, Pant hung back and just opened the face of the bat to steer it into the gap at gully
Chris Woakes to Shubman Gill, FOUR! GLORIOUS! A bit of a loosener from Woakes and it has been put away with sheer class. Juicy half volley, outside off, Gill leans and drives it to the right of cover. The fielder dives to his right but the ball scoots through! First boundary of the day and this is now Gill's best score in Tests, going past his 128 in Ahmedabad against Australia in 2023.
Brydon Carse to Shubman Gill, The first run of the day comes on the very first ball. A short ball, outside off, Shubman Gill gets inside the line and hooks it towards long leg for a single.
“This pitch had a bit of grass yesterday and that meant it came on to the bat better and seamed a bit. With the sun out, the grass is gone and that means the ball will come on to the bat even better. India will need to watch out against the second new ball, once they get through that, they can play their shots with freedom. If they manage that, India can look to post around 500 by Tea time and then look to declare” says Sunil Gavaskar.
Shubman Gill is just 75 runs short of achieving his maiden double-century in Test cricket.
Yashasvi Jaiswal expressed his ideology after scoring a brilliant century on Day One of the first Test at Headingley, Leeds.
