Travis Head had a thumping innings at the hands of Australia as they defeated England by seven wickets in the first ODI and, with this victory, headed into the five-match series with a 1-0 lead. In their match against England at Trent Bridge in Nottingham, Head remained unbeaten on 154 off just 129 balls and came with 20 fours and five sixes as the Australians chased down the massive target of 316 in just 44 overs. This victory is Australia’s 13th back-to-back ODI win and their joint fourth-highest successful chase in ODIs.

When Australia won the toss and chose to bat, England was bowled out for 315 in 49.4 overs. Though Salty had fallen early, Ben Duckett along with Will Jacks could contribute a well-settled second-wicket stand of 120 runs. Duckett was unfortunate to get dismissed for 95 by Marnus Labuschagne, who remains the only player from Australia to take three wickets. Jacks played an crucial 62 runs before Adam Zampa got him, celebrating his 100th ODI with some excellent figures of 3 for 49 in 10 overs. Stand-in skipper Harry Brook and Jamie Smith provided needed runs with 39 and 23, respectively; young Jacob Bethell was impressive with 35, which included three fours and a six.

England was given a great start by Matthew Potts as he sent Aussie skipper Mitchell Marsh back to the pavilion. Australia, though, went ahead in the right direction in the wake of Head, who was hitting in tandem with Steve Smith to the tune of 76 runs for the second wicket. Head showed the way ahead after being dismissed by Liam Livingstone and extended it to 73 runs as Cameron Green laid on a 32-ball 32.

Head reached his century off 92 balls and had gone past the 150-mark off 123 deliveries. Labuschagne contributed handy 77 runs off 61 balls in an unbeaten partnership of 148 runs for the fourth wicket. They will look to regroup after this jolt when they play the second ODI on September 21 at Headingley in Leeds.
