Duleep Trophy 2024: Sanju Samson Ends 1,740-Day Wait For First-Class Century, Fuels Test Dreams

Sanju Samson completed his 11th first-class century within only 94 balls struck with 11 fours and 3 sixes.

Sanju Samson’s 11th first-class century took nearly four years and nine months to accomplish. In the eight years since he participated in his maiden first-class match in 2011, he has amassed ten centuries. It has been a lengthy road to his eleventh red-ball tonne. He has four fifties in 11 innings during the 2022–23 and 2023–24 Ranji Trophy seasons, although he hasn’t reached triple figures in any of them.

Sanju Samson’s Magnificent Ton

Supporters had anticipated that he would break the curse in the Duleep Trophy 2024, but he was eliminated in the first round. When he played, the India A vs. India D match produced a pitiful 5 runs in the first innings and 40 in the second. He had one more chance to excel in the Duleep Trophy final round.

In their match against India B, Shreyas Iyer’s India D team played admirably, but they faltered later on after taking the lead with half-centuries from Ricky Bhui, KS Bharat, and Devdutt Padikkal. They would have gone from 105/0 to 217/5 if they had been able to maintain that pace. Samson spent a comparatively calm spell at the wicket despite all of that commotion. He was hitting 89* and batting with considerable conviction.

He scored his eleventh first-class century the next day in just 94 balls, hitting 11 fours and 3 sixes. Like in the previous game, Samson demonstrated his purpose once more, but this time in Anantapur, everything worked out for him.

Samson handled the situation calmly despite four bowlers with international experience threatening to halt the match. It was a bit of a conflict. He specifically targeted Sundar and Saini, scoring 55 runs off of only 36 balls. When Saini eventually got him out for 106, Samson had already established himself as the team had crossed the 300-run threshold.
