The Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025 witnessed a nail-biting encounter on February 24, with UP Warriorz defeating Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the first-ever Super Over of the tournament. At the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, Ellyse Perry scored a brilliant innings of 90 not out off 56 balls, with nine boundaries and three sixes. Even as Perry’s incredible knock, RCB managed only four runs while chasing nine in the Super Over.
Following the nail-biting finish, the captain of RCB, Smriti Mandhana, who had batted in the Super Over after a low score to begin with, was disappointed. She apologized to her Australian compatriot Perry for failing to win the game, but did not fault her bowlers for the defeat.
“Always good to have Pez back bowling. An all-rounder like her, she is one of the greatest in women’s cricket. Brilliant to watch (her batting). As a team, really have to tell her sorry…how could we not win that game for her,” Mandhana said in the post-match presentation.
“Disappointing to be on the losing side today. Did a lot of things right, throughout the batting and the bowling innings. These things happen, we will take it and come back stronger. (On the powerplay) I have been very positive throughout the tournament but went into a shell a little bit. We have a few days, we will work on it and come back stronger,” the opener said.
Earlier during the match, UP Warriorz had scored 161 losing nine wickets. With 18 to get off the last over, Sophie Ecclestone flipped the game around in an extraordinary way. She dismissed Renuka Singh with two sixes and a four, leaving just two to be chased off the last two deliveries. After there was a communication lapse with Kranti Goud, Ecclestone took one run off the previous last ball. On the last ball, Kranti missed the ball, and Ecclestone was run out by Richa Ghosh while trying another single, taking the match to the Super Over.
