Having guided India to Champions Trophy success, Rohit Sharma had no hesitation in dashing retirement rumors that were making the rounds even before the side arrived in Dubai for the event. Clearing the air, he declared, “One more thing. I’m not going to retire from this format, just to make sure that no rumours are spread moving forward.”
Rohit Sharma To Prepare For 2027 World Cup
At 37, Rohit avoided giving a time frame to his career but left the door open for the 2027 ODI World Cup. A recent report in Cricbuzz, however, indicates that the Indian captain has already begun focusing on the showpiece event in South Africa. Assistant coach Abhishek Nayar is said to be playing an instrumental part in influencing Rohit’s future plans, with the opener determined to continue playing ODIs up to 2027. His end goal? Winning a third ICC title as captain before going on to leave white-ball cricket in the near future.
“Devised a plan to remain fit and competitive for the African event.”
Nayar will help him “focus on his fitness, batting, and approach.”
Abhishek Nayar A Crucial Support For Indian Players
“A key part of his plans is likely to be Nayar, who is regarded as a highly intelligent coach with modern techniques and styles. Many players in the Indian team, including KL Rahul, have either worked with him or are currently working with him. In fact, Rahul has credited Nayar on more than one occasion about the guidance he got from Nayar and continues to work with him. Rohit will team up with his former Mumbai teammate as part of his preparation,” the report read.
Rohit Sharma’s Test Future
Rohit had already retired from T20Is back in June last year, having led India to the title win in the T20 World Cup final in Barbados. Still, his Test match form has remained a cause for concern. His failure in the longest version forced him to quit himself from playing India’s playing XI for the Sydney Test match against Australia last January. An unsuccessful comeback attempt in the Ranji Trophy added to the growing speculation regarding his Test career.
“Let the IPL be over first. Only an astrologer thinks so far ahead into the future.”
Rohit Sharma Likely To Take Decision After IPL
In spite of that, the report makes it clear that Rohit plans to stay on in Test cricket, although his future in the format could depend on his performances during the forthcoming season of the IPL. After the league, India has a tough five-Test tour of England in June, and the selectors are still not sure about giving him the captain’s role for the series.
