The BCCI is being cautious about entrusting Jasprit Bumrah with any leadership roles for India’s forthcoming five-Test tour of England. The reason lies in the fact that he suffered a back injury a few weeks ago during the last Test against Australia earlier this year that kept him sidelined for almost three months. The injury also prevented him from participating in India’s successful Champions Trophy campaign.
England Series Kicks Off New WTC Cycle
The ICC World Test Championship (WTC) cycle will start in England on June 20, and the Indian management is looking forward to long-term planning. The board would like a leader who is fit and can play all five Tests, and Bumrah’s consistent fitness concerns have cast doubt over his involvement in the entire series.

Return to Action via IPL
Bumrah made a comeback in the current Indian Premier League (IPL) for Mumbai Indians. Interestingly, he had captained India for two Tests in the Australian series in the absence of Rohit Sharma and took the team to their only victory of the tour. Nevertheless, workload management is a major concern for the team management, which may mean that he may be rested for some of the England series.
“Bumrah Won’t Be Playing All Five Matches”
“We want a player who will be available for all five Test matches, and he should be given the vice-captain’s role,” The Indian Express quoted a BCCI source as saying. “Bumrah won’t be playing all five matches, so we don’t want to appoint different deputies for different games. It will be better that the captain and vice-captain be certain and play all five Tests.”

Who’ll Be The New Vice Captain?
Considering Bumrah’s situation, BCCI will be looking forward to give chance to a new player who will be playing all the five matches and can potentially lead India in the future. Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant are the two names that have emerged as the top contenders for the position.
