It was a difficult decision

In a Social media post, he said- “As a player, I have given my best. I did my duty honouring the game, honestly and morally towards the motherland. It was a difficult decision, but I cannot speak here of the many unforeseen factors which, willingly or unwillingly, influenced me to make this decision.”

“During the journey of 13 years, I got fond memories. Thank you all for the best wishes on this journey. Lahiru has maintained suspense over the reasons for his retirement,” wrote Thirimanne

Former Sri Lankan ODI captain Thirimanne had an international career spanning 13 years. He made his ODI debut in January 2010 against India. He played the last Test match against India in Bengaluru last year. During his career, he scored a total of 2088 runs in 44 Tests at an average of 26.4. This included three centuries and 10 half-centuries.

In the One Day (ODI) format, Thirimanne scored 3194 runs in 127 matches at an average of 34.7. He has scored four centuries and 21 fifties in ODI and proved his strength in the format. 

Thirimanne has also scored 291 runs in 26 T20 Internationals. Thirimanne was part of the Sri Lankan team that won the T20 World Cup by defeating India in 2014. In that tournament, he scored 44 off 35 balls in the semi-final against the West Indies.
