India’s opening match against Bangladesh in Champions Trophy 2025 was a thrilling match, with records tumbling, flashes of brilliance, and some irritating fielding lapses. From rapid wickets to milestone feats, the action-packed game did not miss any thrills.
Records Set By Indian Players
The game witnessed some spectacular individual performances. Mohammed Shami emerged as the fastest Indian bowler to pick 200 ODI wickets, adding one more feather to his cap. Rohit Sharma, however, achieved the feat of 11,000 ODI runs in a short span of time, becoming the second-quickest player to achieve it. To make matters better, Rohit completed his 100th win as the captain of India, an important personal and team milestone.
Rohit Sharma Misses Out On Axat Patel’s Hat-trick Catch
However, a missed opportunity nearly cost India dearly. Rohit Sharma, stationed at first slip, failed to hold on to a straightforward catch off Jaker Ali’s bat. Had the catch been taken, Bangladesh would have been at a staggering 35/6, and Axar Patel would have had the chance to complete a hat-trick, having already dismissed Tanzid Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim on consecutive balls.
Rohit Sharma Frustrated After Losing The Catch
Rohit, clearly frustrated, slapped the ground at missing the opportunity, and soon presented a genuine apology to Axar for the expensive miss. His gesture was an indication of the captain’s dedication to the team’s victory, in spite of the blip.
“May take him (Axar) for dinner tomorrow (smiles),” Rohit said. “No, that was an easy catch, I should have taken that catch with the standards I have set for myself. But I do know these things are bound to happen. Credit to (Towhid) Hridoy and Jaker, they stitched a nice partnership.” Rohit Sharma said in post-match presentation.
More Misfielding By India
The fielding issues did not end there. Hardik Pandya, despite his athleticism, spilled a comparatively simple catch at mid-off off Hridoy’s bat. Moreover, wicketkeeper KL Rahul also missed a stumping opportunity that could have returned Jaker Ali to the pavilion. These mistakes left India in regret, as they provided Bangladesh with an opening to come back.

India’s Steady Chase
In retaliation, India chased the target successfully with 46.3 overs. Shubman Gill played an elegant and undefeated innings of 101 to take India home. Even with the initial fielding mistakes, India was able to keep the game under their control and end on a high note, the target being achieved quite comfortably.
India’s win emphasized the toughness and individual talent that would prove so important in the subsequent matches of the tournament.
