Prior to the Champions Trophy final in Dubai, there was speculation that at least one of India’s star cricketers Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma would retire from ODI cricket, irrespective of the result. But with India’s thrilling four-wicket win over New Zealand, the two players cleared the air on their retirement. Post-match, Kohli and Rohit clarified that they don’t have any plans to retire from ODIs. Their assurance came soon after their victory ‘dandiya’ dance which went immediately viral on social media.
Retirement Rumors Gain Momentum Ahead Of Final
The speculation about their futures had picked up momentum because of their recent moves to retire from T20Is. Kohli and Rohit had retired from the shortest version last June after taking India to the title victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup in Barbados. With their inconsistent performance over the last few months, many felt a similar declaration would follow the Champions Trophy final.
Though Kohli wasn’t originally connected with instant retirement discussions, there was a report by PTI before the decider indicating that Rohit, aged 37 now, was mulling over his ODI career and was set to meet chief selector Ajit Agarkar after the match.
“We Are Not Retiring Now!” – Rohit’s Epic Response
Following the trophy lift, Kohli and Rohit were pictured in high spirits celebrating. After their now-viral ‘dandiya’ dance and photo shoot, Rohit seized the moment to shoot down the retirement speculation straightaway. With a smile, he proclaimed, “Abhi hum koi retire nahi ho rahe” (We Are Not Retiring Now)—which left Kohli in stitches.
RO-KO In 2027 World Cup?
Kohli, 36, when asked about the retirement rumors, confirmed that he isn’t hanging up his boots anytime soon. This has rekindled hopes that both legends will keep playing for India in ODIs, possibly playing in the 2027 ODI World Cup. By making their bold declaration, Kohli and Rohit have silenced speculation at least for now giving fans the assurance that they are still committed to Indian cricket in the 50-over format.
