Why Is Holi Celebrated?

Holi has important myths behind it. One of the most well-known stories is about Prahlad and Holika. Prahlad was a true devotee of Lord Vishnu, but his father, King Hiranyakashipu, did not like this. His aunt, Holika, tried to burn Prahlad in a fire, but she was burned instead, while Prahlad survived. This story represents the victory of faith and goodness. Holika Dahan, the bonfire tradition during Holi, honors this event.

Another well-known story is about Lord Krishna and Radha. Krishna playfully put colors on Radha’s face, which started the tradition of Holi as a celebration of love and togetherness.

How Do People Celebrate Holi?

On the morning of Holi, people come together in open spaces, streets, and parks to play with colors, dance, and enjoy music. The festival brings people together, as everyone, no matter their background, joins in the fun. It’s also a time for forgiving others and making peace, as old fights are forgotten in the excitement of the celebration.

Holi is also a time for delicious food! Traditional treats like gujiyas (sweet dumplings filled with khoya) and thandai (a milk drink with nuts and spices) are an important part of the celebrations.
