A five-year-old girl was allegedly raped inside a temple in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, on May 18, police said, adding that the suspect was arrested. Police said the girl was playing close to a temple near her home when suspect Pavitra, who resides close to her home, approached her and took her inside a temple, where he outraged her modesty.
The CCTV footage of the incident also went viral, and it was revealed that he fled the spot after the minor screamed for help. As her family members heard her scream, they rushed to the spot, and the minor revealed the incident.
It also came to light that the police had released the suspect, believing him to be mentally unwell, but he was later arrested again after a video of the incident widely circulated.
The incident ignited anger among the locals because of how the police dealt with the initial investigation. Police have said that after the family claimed the suspect was mentally unwell, they released him. However, he was arrested again after the video was circulated, which confirmed the horrific incident. Police said the suspect works at a chemist shop and his family lied about his mental illness.
