Tamil Nadu: Chennai Police Commissioner Transferred Amid BSP Leader’s Murder Investigation

Chennai Police Commissioner Sandeep Rai Rathore was transferred following the brutal killing of Tamil Nadu Bahujan Samaj Party Chief K Armstrong in the city. Senior IPS officer A Arun, currently serving as the additional director general of Police (ADGP) for Law and Order, will take over Rathore's position.

The Tamil Nadu government transferred Greater Chennai Commissioner of Police Sandeep Rai Rathore on Monday. This action came shortly after the brutal killing of Tamil Nadu Bahujan Samaj Party Chief K Armstrong in the city, according to a report by news agency PTI.

The home department’s principal secretary, P Amudha, issued an order stating that A Arun will be posted as the ADGP/commissioner of police for Greater Chennai, downgrading the post of Sandeep Rai Rathore. Rathore will now be appointed as the DGP of Police Training College in Chennai, currently led by Rajeev Kumar.

Senior IPS officer Davidson Devasirvatham, ADGP, will replace Arun as the ADGP of Law and Order. The Home Department, led by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, made this decision. Rathore’s controversial statement about a reduction in murder cases in Chennai compared to last year contributed to this change.

On Friday, six men posing as supporters hacked Armstrong to death. After committing the crime, the attackers fled the scene on bikes.

Police investigating the murder have arrested eleven men so far. Officials believe the crime might be a revenge killing, linked to the death of gangster Arcot Suresh, allegedly killed a year ago on Armstrong’s orders. BSP Chief Mayawati visited Chennai to pay her respects to Armstrong and demanded a CBI investigation, alleging that the real culprits have not been arrested by the Tamil Nadu police.

“I urge the state government, especially the CM, to ensure law and order. The weaker sections should feel safe. If the government had been serious, the accused would have been arrested. Since they haven’t, we urge the state government to refer the case to the CBI,” she said.

Opposition parties, including the AIADMK and BJP, blame the ruling DMK for failing to maintain law and order in the state.
