New Delhi: Expressing concern over the matters of hate speech, the Supreme Court on Wednesday said that to get rid of hate speech, religion has to be separated from politics. There have been cracks in mutual brotherhood. Till the time politics is not separated from religion, it cannot be controlled.

The top court said, ‘Hate speech is pure ‘politics”, why can’t people take a pledge not to humiliate the members of society? The states have become impotent, and powerless and do not do the work on time. If it is silent then why should it be a state?

The court asked the Maharashtra government to respond to a contempt petition filed against them for failing to control hate speeches by Hindu organizations despite orders from the apex court. The next hearing will be on April 28.

A bench of Justices KM Joseph and Justice BV Nagaratna said that statements like ‘Go to Pakistan’ regularly break dignity. Where have we reached now? Once upon a time, we used to have speakers like Nehru, and Vajpayee, now people come in hordes to listen to misleading elements”.
